Lady Annabelle Simpson Jones
|
|
Born
in 1867, the oldest child of Lord and Lady Simpson Jones,
Annabelle has three younger brothers, Whistan, Sigmond and
Tremaine, whom she helped raise after her mother died from
malaria in Tanganyika.
When
she was fifteen, Annabelle uncovered an occultist plot at
her school, Esmerelda Winstanley’s Academy for Privileged
Girls, and was forced to run away after burning down the
school chapel after rescuing a fellow student from a
sacrificial altar. Her father sent his coachman, Bert
Lavender, to retrieve Annabelle from Europe, but when he
caught up to her she was embroiled in a crazy voodoo
escapade, from which the pair of them only just escaped. By
the time they got back to England, Lord Simpson Jones was on
his death-bed, having been poisoned by the vengeful voodoo
master from Paris, Baron Vendredi, who then disappeared.

After her father’s death, Annabelle decided to go and live
in fashionable London, taking Bert Lavender with her as a
live-in servant, but her frequent globe-trotting jaunts,
motivated by the secret desire to find and bring to justice
her father’s killer, have attracted much eyebrow-raising
from London society.
In
1891, the 24-year-old Annabelle was instrumental in
defeating the wicked vampire Count Orloff in Ireland, and
rumours persist among the occult community that she was
bitten by the Count and became his mistress. There are many
who still believe her to be their dormant messiah, and
eagerly await her unmasking as the Princess of Darkness.
After the Orloff affair, Annabelle decided to give up
adventuring, but Bert, seeing that she was withering away in
polite society, realised she needed to get back out there
and jumped at the chance to introduce her to his chum Archie
Cunningham, who took Annabelle on a trip to Egypt where she
fell in love with Col Sir Henry Templeton Smyth, to whom she
is now engaged.
Annabelel is the niece of John Simpson, owner of Simpson’s
Grand Divan Tavern on the Strand. Her brother Whistan is a
lunatic, incarcerated at Beldark Asylum, Sigmond is an
itinerant alcoholic gambler and little Tremaine is doing his
PhD at Oxford.
